Basically this means: how to know yourself.
Who are you?
We begin this little journey through these words by understanding who we are not: the image that has been chiseled in our mind according to our society’s conditionings. Our society has fostered the thought that we are just thought…
Thus, the motto “I think, therefore I am / cogito ergo sum”, by Descartes. Yet, this motto has been taken to an extreme. In Western society philosophy is mental and the way we perceive reality and everything is rational and mental. We’re probably the first or only culture in the world, in human history that has done so.
But this has disconnected us from ourselves, from feeling and sensing. With this disconnection, there is a disconnection to ourselves. We begin to recognize who we are by recognizing the basic aspect that makes us up as humans… not as spiritual beings, but as human beings. And that is our human body.
Our human body is wise… is full of wisdom. When we relearn how to listen to it and do what it voices to us, from the basics like: what to eat, what its reactions are to things, what it intuits… which habits, places, people are best for it and what makes it feel repulsion. There is an innate wisdom that exists in all nature and our body has that, too.
So when we recognize that we begin to recognize ourselves. How else do we recognize ourselves?
By being open and by really looking deep inside you and knowing and understanding: what it is you like, when you ask yourself who you are and feel the response, not only think it, by questioning the beliefs that society, family, religion, media have put inside of you. In order to do that, it’s basic for us to… breathe and reach a state peace in our head, to lower the volume of our thoughts, of the chaos mind. Our society is drawn to thinking too much. We can think so much, we’re experts at that. But how good, really does it bring to us? How much fulfillment… how fulfilled do we feel as a society?
The answers are quite obvious: not very. When we recognize what we like, what we don’t like, who you are – but not from a mental or rational state -.
“What do I want in life, what is it I don’t want, what type of activities do I like, what type of things I don’t like to do, what type of people I like to hang out with, what type of people I don’t?”
It’s the first step in self recognition. And from there, when we know, when we have a greater awareness of that recognition, then we can choose with much more authority on ourselves, where is it we want to go, what it is we want to do with our lives, with ourselves.
Just lowering the volume of our head and trying to feel who we are, what we like, what we want, what we don’t want and like, and recognizing that will give us a map of who we are. When we follow that inner compass, and do the things that we like and put aside the things that we don’t like (from a deep sense) we begin that journey of self discovery.
Simple, right?
This entails taking Responsibility towards ourselves, and wellbeing, towards our family, our community and Mother Earth. Another way that can help self recognition is by spending a lot of time in nature. It helps us enter the state of peace and serenity that can make us understand ourselves. Diminish your consumption of media garbage. Indigenous wisdom is all about self recognition. And from there expand my perception of reality, so I can have an even higher consciousness of who I am, not only as a human, but as a spiritual being.
